Speeding Lab: Lia, Riley, Lexi, Emma

The speed limit of the road in front of the high school, Cooper Road, is 35 mph. Many people find it necessary to go above this set speed and therefore go against the law. Our task was to detect those perpetrators by finding their speed. We divided their distance by time.

First we measured out 20 meters in the grass by the road with a measuring tape. Then we had one person stand at the front of the measuring tape and another at the end. Another person would record the characteristics (color) of the vehicle passing. The person in the front would yell go signaling the person with the stopwatch to start the timer. When the car’s rear end passed the tape the timer would stop. Then we would record the time. We followed the steps 10 times for 10 cars and recorded the data. Once we got inside we calculated the speed by dividing distance by time.
