Diffrence between Velocity and Speed

Being a baseball fan, October is perhaps one of the best months of the year cause on top of football (anyone see the end of Mich St- Wisconsin?) you got the World Series. Well Albert Pujols decided to put on a show in game 3, swatting 3 home runs, all of which were impressive. The 1st home run was a high inside pitch he nearly put in the 2nd deck, and it left everyone speechless.

That got me thinking about how powerful major league hitters are. One of the more impressive stats is how fast a batter sends a ball off the bat compared to how fast it was pitched. Its even more impressive if you look at it in terms of velocity, instead of speed.

Most major league hitters can send a 90 MPH fastball back through the pitcher box (right back up the middle) at 110 MPH. In this case, were ignoring any movement up or down and side to side, saying that it is sent back perfecly level back to the pitcher. The change in speed ignores the chaneg in direction, so the speed is only increased 20 MPH. However, the change in velocity, which takes into account direction, is 200 MPH (90 one way to 110 the other). In short, direction matters!!! Just ask any pitcher who has been hit by one of those come-backers.

Random Sports Fact: Albert Pujols joined Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson as the only 3 people to hit 3 homers in a World Series game.

Bonus Random sports Fact: He also joined Adrian Beltre as the only two players to hit 3 homers in a playoff game this season.
