Wind Vectors

When the calendar hits November, distance runners know what time it is. Its time to get those last 5ks and 10ks in before the snow starts.

Now ask a distance runner what part of the weather bothers them the most and most will say that its the wind. A wind at your back helps you, but that never happens. It seems like the wind is always in your face.

To figure out if the wind is helping or hurting you, a simple vector anaysis can determine that (cause it can never be a wind from one of the 4 main directions). Lets say you have a SW wind (the wind is blowing SW). SW is located at 45 degrees from the vertical, so there are equal vectors in the S and W directions. So if you are running north or east, you're fighting the wind but of you're running south or west, then you're running with the wind. Over a 5k or even a 10k, it impacts your time more than you might think. Think about this: for the 100 meter dash, if there is anything more than a gentle breeze aiding the sprinters, then the time cannot count as the world or country record.

Random Sports Fact: On Sunday, the New York marathon course record was smashed by about 2 seconds.

smashed by two seconds is not smashed. Now if it was by over two minutes, THAT would be smashed... Oh wait that's what happened (Geoffrey Mutai, 2:05:06).
