Inquiry Lab - Resistivity of Play-Doh
By FizziksGuy In Electricity
Students will independently determine the resistivity of an unknown material (Play-Doh) using common electrical equipment available in the lab. Students have been introduced to Ohm’s Law and the Resistance of a Resistor formulas previously, and have had a very brief introduction to building electrical circuits from a schematic from the “Resistivity” Lab. Students have also used ammeters and voltmeters in the resistivity lab, though all the equipment is still quite unfamiliar.
The goal of this activity is to reinforce Ohm’s Law and the resistance equation in a practical sense, while guiding the students to develop their own experimental procedure and analysis in an inquiry-based format. The added challenge of students working with circuit schematics to design and build their own circuits will also provide them a head start into our next activities, focused on series and parallel circuit analysis.
Objectives: CIR.A2 I can utilize Ohm’s Law to solve for current, voltage, and resistance.
CIR.A3 I can calculate the resistance of a conductor
CIR.B3 I can use voltmeters and ammeters effectively
Materials: Play-Doh
Ammeter
Voltmeter
DC Power Supply
Connecting Wires

Fundamentals of LaTeX for High School Students
By FizziksGuy In Books
LaTeX is a commonly used science, technology, engineering and mathematical (STEM) typesetting program. It is designed to allow writers to focus on content while producing high quality output. Unlike Microsoft Word or Apple Pages, however, it is not a what-you-see is what you get (WYSIWYG) interface, and therefore has a steeper learning curve than some of the more commonly available writing tools. The program is available on a wide variety of platforms, including Windows, Mac OSX, Unix, Linux, and even iOS. For the purposes of getting started, we'll assume you will be using a web-based implementation of LaTeX.
Advantages of LaTeX are a clean, crisp output while allowing the writer to focus on writing and content as opposed to appearance of the final document. Students are highly encouraged to focus on writing the entire document first, then coming back later to tweak the stylization and appearance of their final product.
First invented by Don Knuth in 1970, LaTeX was designed as a tool to help publish a computer programming book. Since then, however, it has been built into a wide number of systems and applications, some free, some commercial, and has been expanded with a wide variety of packages which extend the functionality of the typesetting system.
This guide is intended to provide you a starting reference. Although it looks complex and does involve a bit of a learning curve, once you gain a bit of experience you'll find you can write high quality technical documents very quickly. Please note that there are tons of additional commands and capabilities built into LaTeX that are extremely accessible with just a bit of Google-Fu.

BLOG: APlusPhysics Community Blog Starter Assignment
By FizziksGuy In APlusPhysics Guides
Handout and directions for student physics learning blogs on the APlusPhysics Community. I hand this out in the fall each year and have students write a blog post every two weeks as a great way to receive ongoing feedback from the students while also allowing them to practice their transfer skills. As a bonus, many find it fun, especially when they track the number of views the blogs get (view counts over 300 aren't uncommon anymore, and one blog post was even referenced in "The Physics Teacher.")

LAB: Rolling Without Slipping
By FizziksGuy In Rotation
Objective: Moment of Inertia by Inquiry
Description: Students experimentally determine the moment of inertia of six different objects (2 solid spheres, 2 solid discs, and 2 rings) by rolling them down a ramp. They then compare their experimentally determined values to the theoretical values which they calculate themselves.
Equipment:
2 solid spheres
2 solid discs
2 rings
(note that these items can be purchased as a group set through lab supply vendors, or you may create your own)
stopwatch
meter stick
protractor
string
Procedure:
Students develop their own procedures for this lab. Note that the students can take one of two paths to determining the moment of inertia of the rolling objects... both result in the same values if derived carefully, and each is a good reinforcement of key concepts students have been studying up to this point in the class.
