    Breaking news, young physicists at Irondequoit High School have calculated the acceleration due to gravity in a novel manner. By using a ball, tape measure, and a stopwatch, they were able to perform this task through this procedure. First, they measured the distance from the ceiling to the floor which was 2.8 meters. Then, one person from the group stood on the table, holding the ball ready to drop it. To make the timing more accurate, the person dropping the ball would also time the ball took to drop. They performed three trials of this to gather a more accurate acceleration. To find the accerlation they used the physics equation: d=vit=1/2at^2. The closest accerlation they achieved was 10.2m/s^2

     

    This method of determining maximum height had such a large percent error due to outside factors influencing the height. For example, all of our shoes had different height off the ground. The guys in our group had on sneakers and then the girls of our group had on uggs. Also, the timing each person did for the person who jumped was different each time. One time the person timing could've been late, messing up the data. A way to make this determination more accurate would to use pressure pads.

  2.                The problem being solved in the lab was to see if people were speeding in their cars down Cooper road. The speed limit on this road was 35 mph (15.6 m/s). In order to find their speed we measured out 30 meters along the road on the sidewalk. We had people stand on the starting and ending point with stop watches to record the time it took the car to travel the given distance. When a car approached the starting point, one person would raise their hand to signal the person standing at the end of 30 meters to start the time. Once the car reached 30 meters, we stopped the time and recorded the time. There was a person standing in the middle of the 30 meters, describing each car that we recorded the time for. The table we created had three columns displaying the  vehicle number (1-10), a description of the car and its speed.  The average speed of all the cars was 12.12 meters per second.

                    After recording all the data from each car, the results showed that every car did not exceed the speed limit. In the beginning, the cars were going below the speed limit due to the cop car that had pulled someone over. After time went on, the cop car had left and the cars started to pick up their pace. To improve our results, we could’ve gone to a busier street or even tried to collect data from a highway. We also could’ve been on a street that had a wider range between stop lights. Lastly, to get a more accurate speed of the car, we should’ve been hidden so the cars wouldn’t become distracted and slow down.

                    According to our data, there isn’t a speeding problem on Cooper Road. The cop car affected the overall speed each car was going, because everyone had slowed down. Also, since we were measuring the speed out in the open, people were slowing down to observe what we were doing.  Overall, today no one was speeding on Cooper due different outside influences.

  3. Well, my name is Miranda. I'm 17 years old and a senior in high school. I'm actually looking forward to taking physics this year, even though I do not really favor science. I am one out of the four seniors on my cheer team this year. I took up cheer this year and last winter season because it is the closest sport to gymnastics. I quit gymnastics due to various injuries. This year, I am really trying to focus on school and give it my absolute best. 

     

    I decided to take regents physics because, like Mr.Fullerton said "Physics is everything". I would like to become a pediatric nurse someday, so taking physics will help me in a way to pursue my future interest. Also, it looks like more fun than any previous science class I have taken.
