  1. That's scary and fascinating at the same time to think how powerful electricity is.
  2. Its so amazing how physics can relate to working out! Cool post Nev.
  3. Unfortunately we can't dodge the physics regents exam BUT the good news is we can dodge dodgeballs in gym class. So yes, that was really corny intro sentence but, you'll thank me later the next time you go to participate in this scary sport :-) Remember the 5 D's: Just kidding, that's from one of my favorite movies: dodgeball. But physics believe it or not has everything to do with dodgeball- throwing, catching, running. When you throw the ball you are inacting a force, velocity, distance, final velocity and accelaration. When catching the ball you are stopping a force through momentum and every force has an equal and opposite force. Your gravity keeps you on the ground and in place when the ball is being thrown at you so that you have the ability to catch it. When you are running- you are using kinetic energy and velocity. KE=mv^2. Funny how physics is everywhere! Good luck on your exams everyone!

  5. Nev- lets go bungee jumping! Cool post!
  6. Although I'm not a nascar driver I know that those cars go extremely fast...I mean it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. The question is how do those cars maintain there outrageous velocity and still safely glide on the track? How is this even possible? One simple word: physics. Have you ever heard of friction? Well, if not, friction is the resistance that one surface or object encounters when moving over another. In physics language friction is represented in equations and diagrams as Ff. Friction is a force. And as you remember Newtons third law; for every force there is an equal and opposite force. Therefore, the rational behind nascar driving is appropriate speed, weight, normal force and friction. The car's weight or (Mg) in physics terms is pulling down on the car. If the car is moving to the right at a certain speed or velocity, the Ff is pulling the car in the opposite direction- or in this case to the left. Because the car is moving this type of friction is called "static friction." In other words objects that are sliding or moving. On the front page of the Physics reference table you can find the coefficients of friction table. In this scenario you would focus on the rubber tires on concrete (dry) which would represent the track- this has a static friction of .90 and a kinetic friction of .68. You can use the equation Ff=U/Fn to figure out either the Force of Friction, the coefficient of friction or the Normal force- depending on what you wanted to solve for. This free body diagram represents the nascar car on the track and the forces that apply. Hope all you car lovers out there enjoyed this. Here is a fun nascar/physics video that goes a little more in depth. Enjoy!
  7. Never knew you played golf Jay! I'm awful at golf...shocker. But awesome post!
  8. Do you ever just feel out of energy? But at the same time you want to work out? Ladies, it's time to motivate ourselves...summer is around the corner! So get off the couch, put the potato chips down and indulge in the physics behind working out and how "energy" is a misinterpretted excuse- trust me you have plenty of it! You see 5 hour energy drinks are actually falsely advertised. The company claims that you're body will never crash hours after drinking the solution....well they're wrong. Research has proven that the sugar content in these drinks and the chemicals in the drink give you a false sense of energy and actually cause your body to trick itself into thinking you have more energy. These sugars actually cause your body to decline at a faster rate in regards to energy. So moral of the story, don't drink these drinks, they are extremely bad for you! In terms of physics, energy actually is power which may be translated into motion, overcoming resistance, or effecting physical change; the ability to do work. This defention may be interpreted by the equation Et= PE+KE+Q. Et stands for Total energy which equals Potential energy (stored energy) and Kinetic Energy (energy in motion) and Q (internal energy). The conservation of energy law states that energy is neither created nor destroyed. So all of those sport drinks and energy drinks aren't actually giving you energy!!! Funny how that works huh? So next time, try a healthier ulternative- see physics solves everyday life problems! For more information on how energy works and is related to physics check this cool youtube video out!

    Look Out Below!

Hahahaha and people say theater isn't exhilerating! Talk about scary!
  10. Have you ever wondered how and why dancing is so unique and special? Well believe it or not, a lot of it has to do with some basic physics concepts like velocity, force, and momentum. Some basic defenitions for your knowledge... Velocity; the rate in which an object is going in a certain direction. Force; lack of better terms a push or pull. Momentum; the mass of an object times its velocity. There are many forces that act on a dancer. For example, examine this picture. In this picture of a girl dancing gravity is pulling her down keeping her from falling as well as the support from the floor pushing upwards on her and finally the friction from the surface of the floor acting in a sideways motion. Newtons third law says that for every force there must be an equal and oppositie force. In this case, this dancer is able to keep balance because of the equal and opposite forces acting upon her. Lastly, have you ever wondered how ballerinas and broadway professional dancers can spin so many times in one prep? And how in the world can they spin so fast?! Well physics also has the answer to that. A couple of things come into play here. Angular velocity is how fast an object spins and angular momentum is rotational interia times angular velocity. Therefore, if an object(in this case the dancer) has a larger angular momentum, then it is harder for the spinning motion to stop and or slow down. Therefore the momentum equation ties this all together: p=mv. Momentum = mass x velocity. So to figure out the momentum behind those amazing broadway performers say in the show Newsies can dance and spin you can use this equation to figure it out; I'm sure Corey Cott the lead in the Newsies wouldn't mind if you asked him his mass . Just kidding don't do that! Physics is EVERYWHERE!
  11. Omg this is crazy! Peoples Iphones crack all the time. At verizon when I bought my Iphone they told me that the glass is really sensative...interesting!
  12. Omg my feet literally like burn everytime i'm on the beach! Good to know
  13. All you guitar players out their ever wonder why your instrument sounds SO different and unique compared to say a tuba? Well the simple answer is physics. I hope that by the end of this post, you will understand why. A guitar string is a common example of a string fixed at both ends which is elastic (meaning springy and flexible) and can vibrate. The vibrations of strings on the guitar are called standing waves, and they represent the relationship between wavelength and frequency. This simple equation can be found on the regents reference table under the categorie "waves." The speed (v) of waves on a string depends on the string tension and waves travel faster on a tighter string; therefore, frequency would be greater on a tighter string and lower on a thicker string. To have different pitches (frequencies) from the strings, the guitar must have different wave speeds, or else no one would want to listen to you, hate to break it to ya bud but one note for an entire song wouldn't get you too many fans! If you could only vary pitch by only varying tension, the high strings would be very tight and the low strings would be very loose and it would be very difficult to play (so you can thank physics for saving your pick and your fingers)! It is much easier to play a guitar if the strings all have roughly the same tension; for this reason, the lower strings have higher mass density, by making them thicker and, for the 3 low strings, wrapping them with wire. That is why strings on a guitar vary in thickness and texture, some are thin and others are thick and tough in texture; because of this your instrument is able to strum at all different frequencies and make these beautiful sounds. For a quick brief summary, a guitar string sound consists of standing waves; the fundamental wavelengh is twice the length of the vibrating part of the string. And lastly, the Western musical scale is based on the overtone series for a string. So the next time you're strumming along and being a rockstar don't forget that physics is the reason why your guitar sounds so good. For some more information and knowledge to expand your thought check out this cool youtube video on the relationship between physics and the guitar!
  14. You said "As any athletic trainer will happily tell you, a good workout is one where you do the most work." So wierd to think and understand how "work" actually works in terms of physics. Relating excersize to physics is cool because it gives you alterntiatives or methods to change your work out so that you recieve the results you seek.
  15. It's interesting to think when molecules bond that their is actually more space...you would think this would be oppositie! Awesome post!
