  1. I love how you connected it to the movie! This is one of my old favorites!
  2. It so cool to think that once this type of movie was meant to seem fictional and now this can actually be seen as something that is true!
  3. When your in the shower belting out songs so know one can hear you i bet you have never thought that singing would have anything to do with physics. Well youre wrong! It totally does! People can not only hear your singing but they can also feel it! By singing, your voice creates vibrations that form into waves. Sound can be represented in wave form. The amplitude of the wave (the height of the wave) is represented by how loud you are singing. The amplitude is the degree of displacement of teh vibrator. Singing at a louder pitch create more vibrations, while singing at a soft pitch doesnt create as much vibration. This can be heard and felt in a car also. Depending on what the volume and the bass in the car is set at a person sitting in the car can feel the vibrations. Usually you cant feel the wave vibrations of a voice that isnt amplified unless you are on a surface that can allow waves to pass through it easily. For example, you can feel vibrations through would very well. So next time your mom or dad say stop singing you can tell them i am just practicing my physics

    Roller coasters!

I never knew that a roller coaster uses its own energy to go up the second hill that's so interesting!
  6. Have you ever looked up into the sky and seen a type of air craft fly over your head. Have you ever wondered how that is possible? Many people would think that since an airplane or helicopter is so heavy there is no way that something like that could fly through the air. But through physics aircraft can fly thorugh the sky. there are four basic components of flight: thrust, drag, lift and weight. Also Newton's first, second, and third laws apply to flying. Newton's first law claims that everybody remains in a state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force. There will be no change in horizontal motion if the thrust equals the drag. Newton's second law states a body of mass subjected to force undergoes and acceleration. This is where the equation Force equals mass times acceleration. (F=ma) newtons second law defines the amount of force produced by the lift needed to overcome the effects of gravity. Newton's third law of motion says for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Lift, drag, weight, and thrust are all components that help the airplane fly and stay in the air.
  7. Wow! I didnt realize that birds can fly up to 40 miles an hour, Thats fast! Great post i would have never thought to connect birds with physics!
  8. So cool! i will never have an energy drink again!
  9. Many people dont realize that there is more to boxing than just hitting someone and trying to knock them out. Physics applies to most of boxing! Energy, momentum, work, power, and velocity all play an important role in throwing a punch during boxing. Before the boxer punches his target he has potential energy which is stored energy,as soon as the boxer punches his target his or her potential energy becomes kinetic energy. Kinetic energy is the energy that a body possesses by virtue of being in motion. The higher the kinetic energy is the harder the punch will be. The equation for kinetic energy is KE= 1/2mv^2. Not only does kinetic energy occur with every punch but so does momentum. Just like kinetic energy the mass and velocity of teh boxer determines the momentum. The equation for momentum is p=mv. There are ways that boxer's can stop momentum, they can do this by using work. The equation for work is W=fd; work equals force times displacement. The physics term of power comes into play beause the boxer than applies the most force applies the most damage to the opposing boxer. The equation of power is P=W/t; power equals work over time. Speed or otherwise known as velocity plays an important role in boxing because it decreases the time of the punch. The equation for velocity is v=d/t; velocity equals displacement over time. the higher the velocity is the higher the acceleration will be, which means your punch will be harder. Not many people would think that a single punch could be related to physics, but it can! Check this video out it explains more about the physics of boxing! Hope you enjoy! http://vimeo.com/63280948

    Car Collisions

I never knew there could be so much physics in car crashes! I liked how you connected it to newtons third law, great post!
  11. How does physics relate to rockets? How can people caluculate how rockets will fly given the parameters? Rockets fly mainly because of newton's third law and the conservation of momentum. Newtons's third law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. To figure out how a rocket will accelerate you would need to learn about momentum. when a rocket is moving through space with a constant velocity, it is very simple to calculate its momentum. The equation for momentum is p=mv. This is momentum (p) equals mass(m) times velocity(v). This also includes direction; if an object changes direction, the velocity and momentum of the rocket will change. Momentum conservations states that the total momentum of an isolated system must emian constant. A rocket sitting on a launch pad or at rest in space has zero veocity and zero momentum. when the rocket starts up, chemicals within the rocket fuel thrust the burned rocket fuel out the back of teh rocket at a very high speed. this creates a large backwards mometum, creating the rocket to be able to lift off of the ground. Because the rocket has a large backwards momentum, this means that the rocket has the same forward momentum. The rocket must accelerate forward to get the needed forward momentum. Watch the attached video it explains rockets more in depth very welll and connects it to other things! Even though the video is 15 minutes its worth it to watch! Hope you like it
  12. I wish i knew about the physics portion of playing basketball when i played, maybe it would have helped me be a better athelete at playing basketball! Great connection to physics!

    Infrared Waves

SInce infrared waves can detect plant life on earth, does this mean that NASA could take pictures of other planets by using infrared waves and searching for other planents with life on it?
  14. i liked that you connected to physics with a sport! Usually people never think sports relate to science!
  15. Most people dont realize that there is science through playing a sport. Watching or playing volleyball is a great way to grasp the principles of physics. Understanding physics can be tricky if you just look at the mind boggling equations and such, but by connecting physics to other things, such as volleyball, physics can help you learn in an easier way. Gravity Gravitational force impacts every aspect of volleyball; whether you are serving, passing, or hitting. Gravity will effect every contact with the volleyball. When some one is going to serve, the server uses upward and forward force on the volleyball, while gravity is using a downward force. Because of the downward force of gravity, the volleyball will make it over the net onto the other side. There are different types of serves that can make it harder for the opponent to pass it on the other side. One type of serve is called the jump-float. This particular type of serve has no spin to it, when the player contacts the ball they try to hit the ball with the plam of thier hand without snapping their wrist. When people are performing the jump float serve, they stand back a couple of feet. This is because, the player wants to ensure that the volleyball is cutting through as much air as possible. The longer the volleyball is in the air the more the volleyball is exposed to the air stream. The jump float serve is very similar to a knuckle ball in baseball; it is very hard to time. When being served by a server using the jump float, it seems like the ball is actually floatng in the air. Another type of serve is called the top spin. Top spin serves is quicker than the jump float. When performing a top spin serve the player snaps their wrist, which causes the force on the ball to accelerate quicker to the ground. A top spin serve brings the ball down because the seems on the volleyball are rolling forward. This causes the air velocity to be faster on the top of the ball rather than on the bottom of the ball; this pushes the ball into a downward motion. When a passer is passing a ball an upward and forward force is exerted on to the ball while gravity is pushing the ball down. To ensure that the volleyball will meet at the target spot, the passer will have to follow through with their arms in the direction of the target. When a volleyball player goes up to hit or spike the ball, they try to use as much force as they can so they can get a kill and grant their team a point. When spiking the volleyball the player exerts a downward force on the ball, crushing it to the other side of the net. When spiking the ball, gravity is now working in the players favor. Players dont have to hit the ball as hard because gravitational force is acting on the ball in the same downward direction. Acceleration and Velocity As gravity pulls the ball down, the ball is accelerating. When a player is spiking the volleyball to the other side of the net, the balls velocity has increased showing acceleration .Throughout the game of volleyball, the ball is constantly accelerating and decelerating as well as the player is; this all depends on the forces that the players put on the ball and how quick or low the player moves to get to the ball. A player on one side could pass an easy free ball to the other side, when very quickly a player on the opposing side can spike the ball back with a high amount of force; this is showing the balls acceleration. Through volleyball, you can calculate the velocity of the volleyball. To calculate this you would need to use an equation. In this case, you could use the equation v=d/t. This stands for velocity equals distance divided by time. For example, if the server was behind the service line 25 feet away from the net ad it took 2 seconds for the ball to pass the net to the other side, the velocity would be 12.5 feet per second. The higher the velocity is, the harder it is for the passer on the opposing side to deliever a good three option pass, which is a good thing. More Here is a video explaining even more physics on volleyball. Have fun watching this video and thanks for reading! Just remember that physics isnt a tricky thing to learn if you connect it with cool things like sports!
