Team Name: Kailzah LLP

Members: Sarah, Elizabeth, Kaila

Safety Rep: Elizabeth

Starting Funds: $30,000

Notes: You are a small high-tech firm specializing in integration of varied technologies for military purposes.  CEO Sarah started the firm as an offshoot of Cornell Research, taking the business private as she focused on high-efficiency rocket engines for national defense purposes.  Shortly thereafter, military regulations required significant robustness improvements in all their products.  Sarah then hired Elizabeth to apply her civil engineering skills to improving product robustness.  Something was missing, however, and when the two realized they were making great products but losing money, they hired Kaila to take over the management aspects of the business (and remind them to tie their shoes each day).

Due to Kailzah’s background in engines, all rocket engines are half price for the firm.

Design Goals: Our team hopes to successfully put a satelitte in orbit unmanned around the planet of Kerbal. It is a useful satelitte that includes solar panels, quality sensors, and "computer stuff". We utilized multiple sections with the couplers so that it becomes lighter as we go higher. We also used a large tank and engine to break the atmosphere. To ensure success, we tested the design multiple times to create a great design.

Launch Goal: We wish to put a satelitte in orbit and to have it stay in orbit without crashing to the earth. We hope to demonstrate in this flight the girl power capability of Kailzah inc. We are confident in our design and the success of our rocket to put a satelitte in orbit in a unmanned mission.

Pilot Plan: The rocket will initially go full throttle and start the launch. It will then go to 75% capacity throttle once it is in the air to prevent overheating. Next, once the tank runs out of fuel, it will seperate the two parts and go on to the next engine. Once it is reaches the applatis (??) it will go full throttle to widen the orbit. Whenever the tank is emptied it will go on to the last tank and just keep swimming.

Safety Rep: Charlie, my favorite safety rep???????

Sounds like a good plan.

Food luck with the launch!

Side note: Apoapsis - highest point in orbit. Periapsis - lowest point in orbit.

These are general terms applied to all planetary bodies in KSP.

IRL they generally have different names depending on which planetary body your talking about.

For example on earth it would be Apogeo/Perigeo.

(I think it's much simpler to have generalized terms for all bodies.)

I am declining this launch.... for now. You are spending a ton of money that you probably don't need to. You have three engines on your rocket, but your plan only describes two stages. Also, your lack of funds should force you to consider placing parachutes on your more expensive equipment in case something goes wrong during launch.

Launch Time: 10:55am

Team Members Present: Members Kaila and Sarah were present for the launch. Elizabeth was unable to attend do to tragic miscommunication (apparently “launch” looks like “brunch…” evidently she viewed the launch via televised recording at Uncle Danny’s).

Play-by-Play:

-Set engines to full throttle. Take deep breath. GO!

-Panic as the rocket begins to lean far too much. Remember you’re not stupid and turn on the ASAS

-As the launch proceeds, be sure to monitor the heating. DON’T PANIC WHEN OVERHEATING BEGINS. Simply turn down the engine throttle to %75 capacity

-When the first tank runs out of fuel, initiate the decouple and wait a few seconds for the falling engine/tank to get behind, then initiate the newly exposed engine into full throttle.

-Always be sure to be face prograde

-Engage RCS as you break the atmosphere

-Check that you’re still facing prograde.

-Once you’re completely out of the atmosphere, examine your orbital situation on a larger scale

-approach apoapsis

-Take deep breath, turn prograde and go full throttle. This will successfully expand the orbital path into one that does not crash the ship into Kerbin ground (or ocean)

-CHEER LOTS! You’re a space station and in orbit!

Time-of-Flight: 00:08:49

Summary: In this mission, Kailzah achieved stable orbit of a space station. This station features solar panels as well as a docking bay. Excess fuel is present so that the orbit may be altered if necessary in the future. Once this fuel has been consumed, another decoupler is present to minimize the size of the orbiting station. We successfully met our goal of a useful space station in orbit with a docking bay for future use. RCS had to be turned on at the proper moment. This was challenging but successfully met. The biggest challenge was making sure that the ship went full throttle at the proper moment. Constantly adjusting throttle and direction (propgade) at the proper moments was essential, and executed successfully. Center of mass is a concern for safety that must be considered in the future, as the ship was rather wobbly. Our next goal presumably will be some sort of docking so that other planets might be easier to obtain.

Opportunities / Learnings: An essential discovery was the significance of an efficient engine and minimizing the amount of fuel. As incredibly heavy as fuel can be, it’s important to have sincerely just enough to make it, thus making the design cheaper and more efficient. Furthermore, it’s extremely difficult to break atmosphere without the largest engine available.

Strategies / Project Timeline: Steping up to a space station was a wise move as it is essential for reaching farther planets. This station could rather easily be moved to the mun or a nearby planet. This is crucial for adventures into the depths of space. Docking would be the next logical step, though much research must go into play before we attempt such a difficult task.

Milestone Awards Presented: First space station in orbit--$130,000

Available Funds: The remaining funds after building are: $13,841

I suppose technically as long as it has a docking port you could effectively turn anything into a station... But I'm with Penguin.

Any of the other teams could have passed this milestone simply by having a docking port on one of their ships.

Perhaps if you demonstrated its station usage by docking something to it?

None of the other teams have docked yet.

Pre-Launch Design Release

Team Name: Kailzah

Available Funds: 143,841

Vehicle Name: Space Heifer I

Vehicle Parts List and Cost: Standard Nose Cone (680), Command Pod Mk1 (600), SAS adv. (1,100), RV-105 RCS Truster (4x450), FL R25 RCS FT (800), FL T200 FT (2x225) LV-909 Liquid Engine (750x1/2), TR-18A Stack Decoupler (600), Rockomax Brand Adapter (50), Rockomax Jumbo 64 FT (5x12,500), Rockomax "mainsail" Liquid Engine (6x850x1/2), FTX-2 External External Fuel Duct (5x250), EAS4 Strut connector (40x250), TT18-A Launch Stabilizing Enhancer (200x5), Protective Rocket Nose Cone (5x1000), Landing struts (3x240), Parachute (2x700), rockomax FT (6,600)

Total Cost: 97,025

Design Goals: The Space Heifer I is designed to go to the Mun in order to explore and search for easter eggs. We used 5 large engines that surround the core, which has 2 decouplers. Using multiple stages will allow us to have enough power and fuel to break the atmosphere. After decoupling, the Space Heifer 1 will be light and have a smaller fuel reserve, making it easier to menuver and land on the Mun.

Launch Goal: This will be our first technical landing on a mass other than Kerbin, which is very exciting! It will test both our flight skills, our utilization of fuel and our landing skills. Our main goal is to land a manned craft safely on the Mun, which has already been done but will help develop our orbiting/landing skills. Though getting to the Mun is our main goal, it would be cool to find an easter egg and achieve one of those three easter egg- launch goals on the way.

Pilot Plan:  1. Turn on SAS and go full throttle

2.) During overheat, turn down throttle to avoid overheat

3.) Decouple and loose the first 5 tanks when fuel is low/out

4.) Go full throttle with first core engine

5.) Turn on propgade

6.) After exiting the atmosphere, cut engine and enguage the RCS

7.) Expand orbit to intersect that of the Mun, forward time to get closer to moon

8.) full throttle & widen untill path is suitable for orbit (when first fuel tank runs out of fuel, decouple to second core tank and engine)

9.) When close enough to moon, shorten path to orbit Mun

10.) Enter atmosphere, SLOW ship down, orient ships engine toward ground

11.) When closer, deploy parachutes (and cross your fingers for Jebedah!)
