Speeding Lab

The speed limit on Cooper Road in front of Irondequoit High School is 15.6 m/s. However, drivers do not always follow the precise speed limit. We collected specific data to discover the average speed of automobiles driving down Cooper Road. To do this, we measured 50 meters, and marked the 25 meter and 50 meter spots for two individuals to stand at with stopwatches. In addition, one individual stood at the beginning of the 50 meters and indicated when a car drove past them. This would signal to both individuals with stopwatches to start the timer. When the car drove past the individual 25 meters, they would stop the timer, while the individual at 50 meters would continue timing. Then, when the car drove past the individual at 50 meters, they too stopped the timer. This provided us with two different measurements of the speed of the car, which made more detailed data. We repeated this process ten different times to ensure the collection of data on a variety of different kinds of automobiles.

Our results of this lab was that the average speed for a car going down Cooper Rd was 15.21 m/s while the speed limit for Cooper is 15.6 m/s. This said, the average car was going a little bit below the speed limit. There was one exception of a car that was going 20.49 m/s. If we were to do this lab again, to improve our results we would use a radar gun to see the speed because that is a lot more accurate than a person clicking a stop watch which has huge room for human error. Mr. Fullerton’s results for one car was about 12 m/s . That was with one car so to have a better range of data he would use more cars next time.

There is not a speeding problem on Cooper road. Our results showed that only 3 out of the 10 cars were going over the speed limit. Showing that there is not a speeding problem in Cooper Rd because a majority of the cars that we collected data for were going equal of just below the speed limit.
