one of the most useful and most    <br \/>troublesome forces we deal with every day&#8230; a force that has tremendous     <br \/>application in transportation, machinery, and all parts of mechanics, yet we     <br \/>spend tremendous amounts of money each day fighting it.&#160; This force, friction,     <br \/>is a force that opposes motion.<\/p>\n<p>&#160;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/image22.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"image\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/image_thumb22.png\" width=\"516\" height=\"465\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>There are two main types of friction.&#160; <strong>Kinetic friction<\/strong> is a frictional force     <br \/>that opposes motion for an object which is sliding along another surface.&#160; <br \/><strong>Static friction<\/strong>, on the other hand, acts on an object that isn\u2019t sliding.&#160; If     <br \/>you push on your textbook, but not so hard that it slides along your desk,     <br \/>static friction is opposing your applied force on the book, leaving the book     <br \/>in static equilibrium.<\/p>\n<p>The magnitude of the frictional force depends upon two factors: <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The nature of the surfaces in contact. <\/li>\n<li>The normal force acting on the object (F<sub>N<\/sub>). <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The ratio of the frictional force and the normal force provides us with the    <br \/>coefficient of friction (\u00b5), a proportionality constant that is specific to the     <br \/>two materials in contact. <\/p>\n<p>You can look up the coefficient of friction for various surfaces on the front     <br \/>page of your Regents Physics Reference Table.&#160; Make sure you choose the     <br \/>appropriate coefficient.&#160; Use the static coefficient (\u00b5s) for objects which are     <br \/>not sliding, and the kinetic coefficient (\u00b5k) for objects which are sliding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/image23.png\"><img
