Exam Results 2010-2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mid-Term results have been compiled and published.\u00a0 In general, scores are right in line with performance within the last few years.\u00a0 The exam itself was styled after the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysedregents.org\/Physics\/\">Regents Exam<\/a> which is given at the end of the school year, and included topics from all aspects of Newtonian Mechanics (roughly half of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysedregents.org\/Physics\/\"> Regents Exam<\/a>).\u00a0 This included 46 multiple choice questions, and 25 open-ended, or \u201cfree response,\u201d type questions.\u00a0 Students were given 180 minutes to complete the exam, as well as a formula sheet (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.p12.nysed.gov\/osa\/reftable\/physics-rt\/physics06tbl.pdf\">Regents Physics Reference Table<\/a>), and a ruler.\u00a0 Students were permitted the use of a scientific calculator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary Data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Summary data from this year\u2019s exam, along with the previous two years of data, are shown at right.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/image5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/image_thumb5.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"244\" height=\"150\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Average score on the exam, with a fairly generous curve, was 76%, compared to 73% in 2010 and 74% in 2009.\u00a0 Median score was 78%, two points higher than last year\u2019s exam, and right in line with 2009 scores.\u00a0 Percentage of students scoring above 85%, considered \u201cMastery Level\u201d by Regents Physics standards, was 25%, slightly lower than in 2010 and 2009, but passing percentage was 83%, several points higher than in past years.\u00a0 Even more promising is a glance at a histogram <a href=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/image6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/image_thumb6.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"244\" height=\"161\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>breaking down student scores further.\u00a0 This data indicates that we have many students in the 80-85% range.\u00a0 Past history has shown me that it is quite possible for students to improve their scores from 10-15% points between now and the actual Regents Exam in June with focused effort, study, and motivation.\u00a0 This indicates the potential for outstanding standardized exam performance in June if students buckle down and focus their efforts.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the Physics Regents Exam is usually one of the last tests offered (sometimes even after official graduation), so obtaining and maintaining student focus at this point of the year can be a challenge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cluster Data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Breaking down exam performance by topic, we observe students demonstrating a very strong understanding of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplusphysics.com\/courses\/regents\/dynamics\/regents-dynamics.html\">Newton\u2019s Laws of Motion<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplusphysics.com\/courses\/regents\/WEP\/regents-work.html#hooke\">Hooke\u2019s Law<\/a> (springs), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplusphysics.com\/courses\/regents\/WEP\/regents-WEP-home.html\">Work and Energy<\/a>.\u00a0 These have been focus areas during the year, although there is room for further improvement in understanding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplusphysics.com\/courses\/regents\/dynamics\/regents-Newtons-Law-2.html\">Newton\u2019s 2nd Law<\/a> as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplusphysics.com\/courses\/regents\/momentum\/regents-momentum.html\">momentum and impulse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cluster data indicates weaknesses in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplusphysics.com\/courses\/regents\/circmotion\/regents-gravity.html\">Newton\u2019s Law of Universal Gravitation<\/a>, although a deeper look at the questions and errors themselves indicates that most of the confusion here is a result of mathematical errors rather than conceptual misunderstandings.\u00a0 This is being re-emphasized as we work through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplusphysics.com\/courses\/regents\/electricity\/regents_electrostatics.html\">Coulomb\u2019s Law<\/a> \/ Electrical Force problems, which utilize almost the exact same mathematical model.\u00a0 Other areas for improvement include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplusphysics.com\/courses\/regents\/kinematics\/regents_projectile_motion.html\">2-D Kinematics<\/a> (projectile motion), a perennial challenge, and utilizing and understanding the metric system, a topic that has been emphasized and will continue to be reviewed throughout the year.\u00a0 Performance on momentum problems was, unsurprisingly, problematic.\u00a0 This relates directly to a \u201cclass as a whole\u201d issue with independent practice and motivation throughout that unit, and will be our top priority for review in mid-June.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/image7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/image_thumb7.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"605\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/image8.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/aplusphysics.com\/wordpress\/regents\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/image_thumb8.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"608\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Student performance is in line with, if not slightly above, expectations for this point in the year.\u00a0 With a focused effort, students can fairly routinely increase their scores 10 to 15 percentage points by June.\u00a0 For struggling students, a variety of remediation protocols are being put in place, including the entire course content and sample quizzes available on the web, tailored directly to this course\u2019s requirements (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplusphysics.com\/courses\/regents\/regents_physics.html\">APlusPhysics.com<\/a>), video lectures on topics corresponding directly to our textbook (<a href=\"http:\/\/physics.hippocampus.org\/\">Hippocampus<\/a>), and even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aplusphysics.com\/podcasts\/pia.html\">review sessions<\/a> which can be viewed from any computer supporting iTunes (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.) as well as iPods, iPhones, Blackberries, Android devices, etc.\u00a0 All of these resources are available both in the classroom as well as the school library for those who don\u2019t have ready access to these resources outside of school.<\/p>\n<p>Data has also been broken down to the same level for individual students, and will be utilized to develop both entire-class and individual review plans to allow students to focus on areas that will provide the biggest \u201cbang for the buck\u201d in their studies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mid-Term results have been compiled and published.\u00a0 In
