Boomerangs
Boomerangs were a highly effective weapon for the natives of Australia (called aboriginals). Today people picture boomerangs as curved sticks or peices of plastic that are supposed to come back when you throw them but never do. However the returning boomerang is likely just a creative development of the far more useful non-returning type. Boomerangs were used in hunting and warfare as an effective long range weapon and for hand to hand combat.
A boomerang, effectively, is to wings stuck together. Because a boomerang is made of two parts it rotates around a center point in a more stable way than a stick. This makes it an effective weapon since it flies straighter and further than a stick. In returning boomerangs the wings, like airplane wings, are rounded on one side and flat on the other so that when air passes over them a pressure difference is created and their is lift. This causes the boomerang to turn because the upper wing is moving faster than the lower (because the boomerang is moving sideways as well as rotating) so lift is created on one side and the boomerang turns eventually coming full circle back to the thrower.
