In this case, my team of investigators was placed at the scene of a car crash where a Cadillac Escalade SUV that had a mass of 3000 kg rear ended a 2000 kg Subaru wagon. We had to come up with a detailed report about that mass, velocity, and momentum of both vehicles both prior to and after the collision. Right when received the problem we dove right in to find the initial velocity of both cars directly following the collision. We used the skid marks distance which was 2 meters for the SUV and 24 meters for the wagon, and acceleration given to us by the auto expert when the brakes are locked which were -2 m/s/s for the SUV and -3 m/s/s for the wagon. To do this we used kinematic equations. To find the velocities of the SUV we use the kinematic equation Vf^2=Vi^2+2ad. Acceleration was given at -2m/s/s and the distance was 2m. October 20, 2010 (Rochester, NY) – Irondequoit High School Students/physicists looked to test the accuracy of their reference tables in a Kinematics and Gravity Lab. For weeks they had been trusting Mr. Fullerton’s, their physic teacher’s, answer for the acceleration due to gravity: 9.81m/s². This just in!!! A young physicist of only 17 years old has just calculated the acceleration due to gravity on planet earth. In Irondequoit high school in Rochester New York a group of mere students proved the age old physics fact. Blind faith couldn’t satiate their thirst for knowledge. Armed with a ball, tape measurer, and stop watch these physics fighters set out with a mission: find gravity’s acceleration.
