Gotta get me one of those!

Wow, horses can carry up to 30% of their body weight. I wonder how that compares to other critters? Humans? Elephants? Ants?
-
Wow, neat stuff! kind of like a super-charged Tesla coil that has solid aiming!
-
Very interesting. What sort of modern weapons are based on similar principles?

Seems like a great sport for demonstrating conservation of momentum and conservation of energy, as you convert the translational kinetic energy and rotational (spin) kinetic energy of the ball into kinetic energy of the pins, doing work on them as you move them and (hopefully) drop them! Great example that will come into play quite often in the next few weeks!
-
I have yet to see a student miss a momentum problem when they use a momentum table!
-
Cool... bet that'd be a great setting for a science fiction story!
-
Great! This also helps explain why swimmers wear caps or shave before big meets... trying to reduce the friction on their bodies for a greater forward net force!
-
Just to go a bit farther talking about friction and ice roads... how do anti-lock braking systems (ABS) work?
-
Terrific! Can you think of other examples of safety devices which increase the time over which an impulse is applied to lessen the maximum force?
-
I wonder what the world would be like if ice more closely resembled other materials we're familiar with, and its solid form was more dense than its liquid form?
-
You'll also find tons of Fourier Analysis in advanced optics and imaging -- very useful for tons of image manipulations, lens modeling, and other cool things!
-
Sometimes I find I want to learn to do something just because it's hard, to prove that I can find a way to make it happen. It's amazing what can come of these self-driven challenges, and it seems as though you have the same inclination at times!

Toys are great for physics demonstrations. I'd love to find the one with the spinning wheel that traveled up and down metal rails.

Sounds a lot like conservation of momentum (coming up VERY soon!)
-
Cool idea -- I gotta build me one of these for next year's circular motion classes! Assuming I don't hurt myself...
-
Great way to tie back to what we know about forces and kinematics!
-
I've always wanted to try snowboarding -- I used to wakeboard back when I was younger and lived in Austin... need to get out some day and see how it works in the snow!

How might you account for the up and down motion (and slight forward and backward motion with respect to the carousel floor) of the horses on the carousel? As I seem to be spending quite a bit of time these days holding my two little ones on carousels, these thoughts keep popping into my mind pretty regularly. Would be interesting to put a camera on a moving reference frame and see what sort of patterns you could develop. Sine/cosine curves?

Glad you survived your night-time adventure!
-
Wouldn't it be cool to see this applied to man-made devices... neat!
-
Terrific application of Newton's 3rd Law!
-
Quite the trip there RTB24...

Nice blog post, I love the application and analysis to something we could see any given day!

Wow, I've never heard of this dish, but now I'm getting hungry!
